- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
- 1 can (28 oz) baked beans (drained slightly for a thicker consistency)
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- Salt to taste
Optional Add-ins:
- 4 slices of cooked bacon, crumbled
- 1/2 cup diced bell peppers
- 1 tsp mustard for extra tang
Instructions
Prepare the Ground Beef:
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, about 5-7 minutes.
- Drain excess fat and set the beef aside.
Sauté the Onion:
- In the same skillet, add the diced onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes, until softened and translucent.
Combine Ingredients:
- Reduce heat to medium. Add the cooked ground beef back to the skillet along with the baked beans, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, and optional mustard.
- Stir to combine all ingredients evenly.
Simmer:
- Cover and let the mixture simmer over low heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld together.
Optional Baking Method:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes until bubbly and slightly thickened.
