Ingredients
Scale
For the Hamburger Steaks:
- 1 lb ground chuck (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
- 1 large egg
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs (or gluten-free breadcrumbs)
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
For the Onion Gravy:
- 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
Instructions
Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper.
- Gently mix until just combined; do not overmix.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into oval patties.
Cook the Steaks:
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add a drizzle of oil or a small pat of butter.
- Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through (internal temperature of 160°F).
- Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
Make the Onion Gravy:
- In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and caramelized.
- Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir well to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
- Slowly pour in the beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
- Simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens.
Combine and Serve:
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet with the onion gravy. Spoon gravy over the patties and simmer for 2-3 minutes to meld flavors.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dish.
