Pair it with mashed potatoes or roasted vegetables for a meal the whole family will love.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground chuck (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs (or gluten-free breadcrumbs)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper.
    • Gently mix until just combined; do not overmix.
    • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into oval patties.
  2. Cook the Steaks:

    • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add a drizzle of oil or a small pat of butter.
    • Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through (internal temperature of 160°F).
    • Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Onion Gravy:

    • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and caramelized.
    • Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir well to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
    • Slowly pour in the beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
    • Simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens.
  4. Combine and Serve:

    • Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet with the onion gravy. Spoon gravy over the patties and simmer for 2-3 minutes to meld flavors.
    • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dish.
